Kindermusik for the 5 to 7 year-olds

5 to 7 years old 60 minutes weekly classes

Kindermusik Young Child is a weekly, 60 minutes class designed for children ages 5 through 8 years that provides a pressure-free, developmentally appropriate transition to musically succeed before taking on more formal instruction. Students explore many facets of the musical experience -- singing, moving, dancing, listening, creating and playing instruments, and composing music. Your child will learn to sing, play glockenspiel, dulcimer and recorder to develop the foundation for learning to sing, play keyboard instrument, string instrument and woodwind instrument.

Semester One Everything your child learns later in semesters 2, 3 and 4 begins with this early introduction to singing, reading, and writing music and rhythm. Through dances and games that focus on rhythmic development, we'll learn a keyboard instrument - the glockenspiel - which will be used throughout all the Young Child classes. Your Home Materials provide the music, instruments, stickers, and activities for a home version of the same playful activities you'll hear about from class, so your child - and you! - can learn where you're most comfortable: at home.

Home Materials (Semester 1) (U.S.A. imported):
1. Children's Folder with stickers, games bag, and Music At Home Cards
2. Family Songbook
3. Home CD of music from class
4. Glockenspiel
5. Canvas bag (during sem. 1)

Semester Two Playing simple musical patterns and songs on the featured instrument from Semester 1 - the glockenspiel - is a central focus this semester. While learning to sing a melody, and then play the pattern on the glockenspiel, we'll delve deeper into understanding of musical concepts such as piano and forte through orchestra-style music such as the William Tell Overture and Peter and the Wolf. Music appreciation and understanding continues with a complte introduction to the instruments - and the families in which they're grouped - of the orchestra.

Home Materials (Semester 2) (U.S.A. imported):
1. Children's Folder with stickers, games bag, and Music At Home Cards
2. Family Songbook
3. Home CD of music from class

Semester Three Appalachian music is a featured musical style this semester. First, you and your child will build a two-stringed dulcimer instrument with materials that we'll provide. Then in class we'll learn to play chords and simple melodies on the instruemnt you built together. We'll also explore rhythm concepts through dance with an introduction to the basic steps in jazz, ballet, and tap dances. Your Home Materials include dulcimer-making materials, activity cards, and music that features recording from Appalachia, African-America, and Native American music, as well as the Western Art musi of the Nutcracker Suite.

Home Materials (Semester 3) (U.S.A. imported):
1. Children's Folder with sticker, games bag, and Music At Home Cards
2. Family Songbook
3. Home CD of music from class
4. Dulcimer

Semester Four In this final semester, we'll introduce the recorder instrument. As your child is introduced to basic methods of playing simple melodic patterns and songs on this wind instrument, we'll also incorporate the instruments, concepts, and songs from previous semesters. With a special emphasis on multicultural music, your child will learn to improvise and write music, as well as experience the musical styles of the Pacific Islands, Europe and Africa; plus play special dances and children's games from around the world, including Alphine dances, Mexico, and Educator.

Home Materials (Semester 4) (U.S.A. imported):

Kindermusik Young Child Sem 2

It really takes a while before I could update what has happened at our centre. Much excitement was going on during the last quarter of the year 2011. It was not easy to write and update our blogs while focusing in organizing and teaching programs and classes. I will try my best to do so.

Our 5 to 8 year-olds completed their Kindermusik Young Child semester 2 last December. It had been a great semester as children started to play melodies on their glockenspiels. Some of them told me that they even tried it on their piano, which made them excited. I could see the children were enjoying their fruit of labour – having to learn all the theories and took some time to build up their musical foundation in Semester 1. They are now more confident to play on melodic barred instrument and also with the strong foundation in music, they seem to be able to make music everywhere they go! They could pick up a spoon and a water bottle, and start playing steady beat by scraping the edges of the bottle, while another child hitting the back of two metal spoons and they formed a little ensemble in an impromptu manner. I am very touched when I see how music has become part of the children’s souls.

In Semester 2, we also worked a lot more on ensemble. Children were handed various percussion and barred instruments of different timbres, and they played music with Ostinato – short repeated rhythmic patterns. Parents also had a chance to experience ensemble playing, and I would say these parents really have a talent for music despite many of them do not have musical background!

Children receiving their certifiates. Look how happy they are!

Thanks to their parents and family member who help them in their practice at home. I give these parents and family members thumbs up!
It has been such a great experience and we had a party at the end of the last class. Children also received a certificate for their great commitment and effort to complete the 1st year course.

I was looking forward to more composing of short melodies with the notes that they have learned so far. But children were less adventurous in this and I shall encourage them to do so in Semester 3. I am looking forward to start Semester 3 with the children. They will be advanced to another level of musical theory learning and also learn how to play a very unique folk string instrument which we seldom see in Malaysia – the two-string dulcimer.

The Young Child in Kindermusik Sem 1

The 1st semester of the Kindermusik Young Child for the 5-8 year-olds ended last Saturday. The children were learning a lot of musical theories through focused listening, instrument play, moving with music pieces in the correct number of beats (Ta as crotchet, ti-ti as quavers, sh as rest). The children had fun working through the Kindermusik for Young Child curriculum -- using movement to work out the Ta and ti-ti, which they internalised the rhythmic patterns and helped them greatly in their instrument play later. These many lessons of musical theories in motion have pounded their foundation in developing their musicianship.

Children working with the rhythmic patterns, they had fun!

Use Music to Paint Pictures

They also learn that music is just like colours, and music can be composed and played to depict a scene in the mind. They listened to the various classical music pieces that paint the pictures. For example, in 2 lessons which we worked on the music of birds, they were introduced to the sound of birds and the word Aviary. They and their moms & dads were first introduced the music Carnival of Animals - The Aviary, which the flute in the ensemble played an important part to depict the birds.

I like one episode when the children brought instruments that they made using different things that they could find in their houses, they were so creative! Kareen made a cymbal using a stainless steel lid of a pot, the mallet was a stainless steel chopsticks. Jia Le & Uma made shakers using beverage bottles. There were many more creative ideas that they had brought!

When I narrated the story of the "Weather" (Sunny day followed by a rain and thunderstorm, and it was sunny again), Jane played the Korean bell that was attached to a basket brought by Kareena to depict the first pinch of Sunlight. Then Uma & JiaLe started playing their shakers to resemble the rain, and Kareena, Zhi Hui & Zhi Jean played the "cymbal" and drums to "create" the thunderstorm. I recorded this and played for their mom & dads, they were so impressed!

Learned about the Great Composer, Mozart.
The children learned about Mozart and his life briefly. Then, they were played his Minuet, and Parents and children had to learn how to dance to it.

The children also learned about how music can tell stories which came in the form of Opera. They were told the story of Mozart's infamous "Magic Flute", and we used the puppets to work out the story in class. Cool!

Finally on the Glockenspiel!
After getting all familiar with Ta, Ti-Ti, Rest and the C note, and instilling some musical "sense" in the children, they are now learning the Musical Staff (the 5 lines) and the C' note, which is to be on the 3rd space.

Auntie Chazyee worked with the children on the gigantic musical staff, it was a lot of physical movement so to help them understand the abstract concept of the "lines & spaces".

After all the theories, it was real time to learn to play the Glockenspiel. The children learned how to hold the mallets in correct positions before hitting their first notes on the Glockenspiel.

Finally, they played the C notes on their Glockenspiel with the song "Train is a-comin". It was only the beginning of their glockenspiel playing and they were already looking forward to more!

The A note was introduced in the following week, and the children also played it and the C note in the song "Doorbell is ringing". It was very nice to hear a uniform sound from all the glockenspiels, this required a lot of concentration from the children. They were doing well!

Young Musicians at work!

We are going to work more on the glockenspiel and it is something which I am really looking forward to. I hope the children's glockenspiel skill will be developed in time for our Annual Parents' Morning on 15 Oct 2011!

Annual Kindermusician Workshop- Orff Shulwerk

I have always looked forward to the Annual Kindermusik workshop. Although this means we have to put aside our work and family for 3 whole days, and going back to the reality right after the training, it is always refreshing despite the tiredness.
Trying to remember it as long as I can what we have been taught in the 3 days is something that is very hard for me too. Especially when I am expecting now. However, this year is the best year that I think the workshop has suited me. Very, very well-written notes by Ginette really helps me to concentrate more on the practical of the workshop than requires me to jot down the notes by myself. Thank you Ginette, you are the best!

This workshop has opened my eyes to the work of Orff Shulwerk, and how PROCESS always matters more than results. The pedagogy is so step-by-step that I feel it is easy for the young children to perform a complicated work in a simple way!

Shirin, our other Kindermusik@Clover educator, has also enjoyed it very much!

Our group project -- coming up with a performance on instruments and entertainment within 2 hours, is never a tough task for great Kindermusician!
This is our dear Ginette. Being a friend, colleague and trainer, she has shown her patience and competencies to help us reach to another level. Love you Ginette!

The lil' musicians at Parents Morning 2009

The children at our centre performed at the Parents Morning 2009 (November). They showcased what they had learned throughout the year in their ABC Music & Me (created by Kindermusik) lessons.

The 2 to 4 year-olds were much easier to manage than the 4 to 6 year-olds. The younger ones followed instructions and developed great listening skills throughout the course and ta-da! They were perfect during their performance of pretending to be little Robins searching for food by following the musical cues. This was a great achievement for the children! I was so proud of them. Some parents feedbacked it was a great success!

Also thanks to the teachers who took great pain in sewing all the sequins for the wings and bibs!

The little Robins woke up as they heard the cues for the Sun to come out.

They started flying high upon hearing the ascending sounds of the bells and gradually flying low upon hearing the descending sounds of the bells.

The little Robins started to hop on the ground to look for food when they heard the staccato notes.

The 4 to 6-year olds were usually over-excited during their ABC Music & Me classes that they were harder to manage. They told me they loved the lessons so much that they started dancing non-stop even though I asked them to stop. I did not know whether to laugh or cry when I heard this. I wanted them to develop listening skill, so it really took me about 6 to 8 months to really know how to manage them.

Nevertheless, they were a lovely bunch. During the practice sessions for the Parents Morning, they cooperated. No one made any fuss when they were asked to be fixed to just one type of instrument being assigned to them. They were able to do the call-and-response rhthym using the drum and the sticks and play their little instruments in an ensemble. Bravo! I was also thanking god that I could take the role of the conductor due to my school-day experience of being a student conductor in the Chinese Orchestra! So what I did when I was young really came into handy.

Oscar playing the drum to the rhythm of tas and ti-tis. The other children responded to his drum rhythm by playing their sticks. Hence, the results were the sticks being the echoes of the drum.

During an ensemble to the Twinkle Dance, they really exercised their steady beats with their instruments. Zhi Hui, Oscar, Uma and Kareena played the major part of the music, Jia Jun, Jeslyn and Royce played the minor part. They all played in unison at the last part of the music.

They were not nervous at all with the spotlights on them! I love them all.
